Funeral: Choosing Hymns

Hymns and music have great power to evoke memories and to bring comfort at significant moments of sorrow or joy.

Here is a selection of first lines of the most popular hymns that may be suitable for a funeral, or memorial service:

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide
Alleluia, sing to Jesus!
Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
Angel voices, ever singing
Be still and know that I am God
Be thou my vision
Blest are the pure in heart
Brother, sister, let me serve you
Dear Lord and Father of mankind
Eternal Father, strong to save
Faithful vigil ended, waiting, watching cease
For all the saints who from their labours rest
God be in my head, and in my understanding
Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father
Guide me, O thou great Redeemer
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
I am trusting thee, Lord Jesus
I am the Bread of Life
I heard the voice of Jesus say
I know that my redeemer lives!
Immortal, invisible, God only wise
In heavenly love abiding
Jerusalem, the golden
Jesus lives! thy terrors now
Jesus, stand among us in thy risen power
Just as I am, without one plea
Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
Lord of all hopefulness. Lord of all joy
Love divine, all loves excelling
Make me a channel of your peace
Morning has broken, like the first morning
Now thank we all our God
O God, beyond all praising
O God, our help in ages past
O Jesus, I have promised
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
Peace, perfect peace
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven
Rock of ages, cleft for me
The day thou gavest. Lord, is ended
The King of love my shepherd is
The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want (Modern or traditional)
There is a Redeemer
Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son
Through all the changing scenes of life
To God be the glory, great things he has done
We have a gospel to proclaim
When I survey the wondrous cross
Ye holy angels bright
